Jose Mourinho Confirms Just One More Signing This Summer

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that the club is now only looking to make one more key signing this summer after already capturing three of his priority targets in what has been an incredibly productive transfer window.

United have already tied up deals for Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, with an Old Trafford announcement regarding the Armenian imminent, to meet three of the four needs the new boss identified upon taking over.

A central midfielder, rumoured to be Paul Pogba or possibly Blause Matuidi, is now firmly in his sights before wrapping up the summer spending and getting down to business on the pitch well before the window closes.

“We decided four targets. From these four, we have three,” Mourinho explained as he appeared at Tuesday morning’s eagerly awaited press conference. Those four signings, he said, will add a certain balance to what he seems to feel is already a strong squad.

“Until we have the fourth, we will be still working hard – myself, Mr Woodward, the owners,” the 53-year-old added.

“When we have the fourth, we can all breathe because the market will be over (for United). We are not going to get the fourth on the 31st August, no way. We are going to get the fourth before then. And then we are stable.”

A handful of players could well be casualties of the managerial change – Juan Mata is already heavily linked with a switch to Everton, while there remain doubts over the likes of Phil Jones, Ashley Young and Adnan Januzaj.

But despite Mourinho’s preference for players who excel in one position over those who can operate in several, there could be a reprieve for Daley Blind.

Blind, along with Mata, was among the first to be linked with an exit within days of Mourinho formally succeeding Louis van Gaal. Yet, the new boss admitted that he will still need one or two versatile players, perfectly describing the 26-year-old, albeit without naming names.

“As a manager, I like specialists and not so much multi-functional players because I’m very clear in my style of player,” the new boss explained.

“But when you have three central defenders injured, you need a left-back or central midfield player who can give you a hand. But basically I’m planning on specialists.”
